Keats-Shelley House, at the Spanish steps returns the myth of romance

A vast library of romantic authors , original manuscripts and portraits. There is all the poetry in English 800 Keats- Shelley House in Piazza di Spagna 26 , open to the public since 1909. In this apartment the author lived and died romantic John Keats.

He arrived in Rome in November 1820 along with his friend, the painter Joseph Stevern , then consul in Rome , and his room looked out on the steps of the Trinita dei Monti, while his days were filled with long walks on the Pincio.

Since the apartment is home to the museum dedicated to him , there are many tourists who continue to visit its rooms, and only 30% of the total is Italian . Here are exposed private letters written by Mary Shelley , portraits and the immense library that celebrates the many writers of the period , among them Oscar Wilde.

A room of what was Keats ‘s apartment, which is currently hosting the exhibition ladies in the spotlight open until 25 November that, with original manuscripts, letters and drawings, tells the life of the women of the era. Women with lives marked by pain and sometimes boredom, but also by strong determination , aspirations and friendships. Just like that of Mary Shelley, author of ” Frankenstein .”

In the rooms is also exposed manikin designed by renowned film costume designer Piero Tosi and the portrait of Keats at the Baths of Caracalla made by his friend and traveling companion Joseph Severn.

Still a place of pilgrimage , the Protestant Cemetery in Rome, in the shadow of the Pyramid , has a plaque that says , at the behest of the same Keats, “Here lies one whose name was written in water”.
