Art Stations at Naples Metro Art

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. Which sentence could suit best. Art should help us to make our daily routine better, tele-transporting us in another more beautiful and superior dimension.

This is in fact is the concept at the base of “Art Stations” in Naples metro, a project promoted by the city council to make the mobility spaces more charming, giving to everyone the possibility to meet contemporary art. Interior and exterior spaces of the stations received about 200 works of more than 100 eminent contemporary artists, creating one of the most interesting examples of decentralized museum, distributed on the whole urban area, a museum that becomes an expositive path that permits a dynamic fruition, not anymore a closed place. The realization of the different stations has been committed to internationally renowned architects and represents a strong requalification of big areas of the urban fabric.

The very interesting thing about this project is that each station is characterized by a different style, perspective and approach, and sometimes in one station can coexist the interventions of different artists. In Toledo Station for instance, developed by the catalan Oscar Tusquets Blanca, we can admire the big mosaics of Kentridge mixed with a LED governate system created by Robert Wilson. And so forth, Dante station, where futuristic steel and glass structures contain ancient pictorial works and a passage of Dante’s Convivio, “written” with tubular white neon lights. Università station deserves an honorable mention, given that his curator, the egyptian Karim Rashid in 2011 won a prestigious award, the “Emirates Leaf International Award”, dedicated to the best works of interior design. This station indeed offers a new sensorial and aesthetic experience through soft volumes, lively fluo colors and innovative materials. For the young university students and for all the travellers, the anglo-egyptian artist imagined spaces that could “incarnate the knowledge and the language of the new digital era”. Hence, walking through the entry stairs, the visitor will be surrounded by a multitude of words coined in the last 50 years and printed in pink and green as “virtual”, “network”, “database”. But one of the most stunning part of this works are the 3D patterns that create a odd frame for the imposing figures of Dante Alighieri and Beatrice, an homage to italian literature. Very impressive the works on Materdei station, which exterior part has been turned into a pedestrian area, enriched with green spaces and new street furnitures. Transit spaces able to touch travellers emotional sphere, offering them, during their daily moves, a pause of beauty and pleasure. Each station would earn a mention, Quattro giornate with its evocative low relieves, Museo with its historical photographies and so on, but we leave you the pleasure to discover all of them.
