Walking tour locations: Christian Catacombs of San Callisto

The catacombs are underground burial places under the city of Rome. There are at least forty of them outside the ancient walls of the city, some discovered only in recent decades. Our tour will allow you to discover these ancient and mysterious places, a city under the city, full of secrets and treasures of the past. Extremely important for the history of Early Christian Art, they contain sculptures and frescoes. Popes’ crypt, also called “the little vatican”, preserves the remains of five Martyrs Popes, then sanctified.

Not the typical touristic tour, but a special visit dedicated to a fascinating stroll among the ancient Rome’s burial places. Rome has more than 40 catacombs, built along the consular roads. Our itinerary foresees the visit of the Appian way ones.

Catacombs Italy

The catacombs of St. Callixtus, on the Appian Way, are among the most important of Rome. They originated about the middle of the second century and are part of a cemeterial complex which occupies an area of 90 acres, with a network of galleries about 12 miles long, in four levels, more than twenty meters deep (tens of martyrs, 16 popes and very many Christians were buried here). In addition to St. Callixtus ones, there are many other catacombs.

Special about this Walking Tour of the Catacombs

When the barbarians invaded Italy and Rome, they destroyed and ransacked many sights, included Catacombs. Powerless, at the end of the 7th century AD, popes moved the remains of martyrs and saints in the churches of the city.
