Verona, city of Love. There is a good reason for this name and not for nothing a man called William Shakespeare set his masterpiece “Romeo and Juliet” in this little gem of a city.
This perfect frame for love stories is located in Veneto region and has always been an important pole since Ancient Rome era, and though the Roman Empire’s city has been reshaped, it exists virtually intact about 6 m below the surface. Its history indeed is preserved in the attractions of the city and Unesco has listed its architecture and urban structure in World Heritage Sites list.

We can start our visit right where once there was a roman forum, now Piazza delle Erbe, Verona’s most ancient square and, according to a survey, Italy’s most loved one in the world. You’ll be immediately struck by the sight of the Baroque Palazzo Maffei and Fountain Madonna Verona, with its big thermal fountain and greek statue (once golden), reassembled during the Middle Ages.

Let’s go on towards the majestic Verona Arena, the famous roman amphitheatre icon of the Veneto’s city. Once used to stage the “ludi” (shows and games), it is still in use for the Verona Arena Festival of Opera and for concerts of many international artists. It is the most well-preserved ancient amphitheatre and offers a sight for sore eyes with no equal. Imagine the arena could host more than 30,000 spectators in ancient times that come from far away.
Scaliger Tombs

Another must-see are Scaliger Tombs, in the heart of the old town centre. This monument in gothic style was designed as monumental tombs for the lords of Verona, Scaligeri family. As you will notice, in the shape of a small temple and covered by a baldachin, they are one of the most evocative sights of the city and as well a noteworthy example of Gothic art.
Romeo and Juliet

Strolling through the city we could cherish many fascinating and impressive monuments and “palazzi”, that narrate its long history of power and wealth, to land to our next stop, Juliet’s House. Thousands of visitors every year come to relive the magic story of the two star-crossed lovers. Here you will see the balcony where Juliet stood while Romeo declared his love.

Strongly recommended to climb up the high hill of the city to enjoy the breathtaking view of Verona crossed by River Adige, plus its Cathedral of St. Zeno, Castelvecchio and plenty of other landmarks.
