History of Valentine’s Day

What do you know about Valentine’s Day? The feast takes its name from martyr St. Valentine in Terni. There are many legends about the life of St. Valentine, one of these tells of the marriage celebrated by the saint patron of lovers between a Roman centurion and his beloved. The marriage was celebrated at the bedside of the dying girl, after that the young baptized, he expressed the desire to never be separated from her, so St. Valentine united them in marriage; then they both died.

Typical Valentine’s Day Traditions

Valentine’s Day is celebrated almost everywhere, from the United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, to France, Australia and Italy as well. Valentine’s Day is known in Italy as “La Festa Degli Innamorati” who celebrate their love for each other also with a more recent tradition, that is fastening some padlocks or “lucchetti” to bridges and railings and throwing away the keys.

After the second half of the 18 century, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings.
At the end of the day, lovers do not need big means to show each other their feelings, just romantic gestures.
