Macro Museum: Contemporary Art Of Rome
Museum of Contemporary art of Rome, better known as MACRO, a modern museum pride of the City.
The venues I’m going to talk about are the example of how art in all its forms merges with the city around and gains new meanings thanks to new spaces in which it can be expressed. That’s the idea that characterizes the Museum of Contemporary art of Rome, better known as MACRO, a modern museum pride of the City. It comprises 3 independent structures, joined together by the same intent and style to create a sort of “macro-museum”. The face of an eclectic cultural city in which the very best expressions of contemporary art, both italian and international, can be fully expressed and represented.

Macro Via Nizza
Formerly this structure was a brewery of Peroni (one of the most famous italian beers) and was converted in a museum in 1999, when the factory of the early 20th century was restored and then expanded by the important french architect Odile Decq. The museum is well integrated with the surrounding urban area and constitutes a work of art in itself. Entering the black foyer you will find yourself immersed in natural light coming from the roof-landscape garden. Then you will be struck by the futuristic and embracing new wing: red geometric volumes that give a complex and dynamic character melt with metal stairs and walkways stretching across the foyer and extending into the large exhibition hall that looks like a precious stone. Inside it unveils a room in varnished red with 160 seats. A very distinctive design and venue!

Macro Testaccio
This complex has a similar story, in fact it used to be a 19th century slaughterhouse. It is situated in Testaccio neighborhood, a popular area that in recent years has experienced a big cultural and artistic growth. The building, built by Gioacchino Ersoch between 1888 and 1891, mixes classic to modern architecture and is an important example of “industrial archaeology” and one of the most important Rome’s industrial buildings. In 2002 two buildings, inside the former slaughterhouse, have been assigned as museum, creating an expositive area of some 43,000 m2. An impressive structure that blends with the dynamism of surrounding district, offering the most interesting contemporary art events and exhibitions that mix new artistic languages and modern visual art.

Macro Testaccio: Pelanda
Inside the Macro Testaccio you will find also the Pelanda, a cultural centre of 5000 m2 managed by the museum. Held here exhibitions, educational workshops and electronic music festivals that have made this industrial structure an innovative and flexible space. The complex is enriched by the presence of the Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Architecture of Rome. In the month of May the Pelanda has hosted an event of the Spring Attitude, an important italian electronic music festival, unique also thanks to its noteworthy locations.
