Chieri celebrates 40 years of Freisa Doc
Freisa there is only one: in Piedmont we have a variety of names, from d’Asti that the Tortona hills, from the Langhe and Monferrato to that of Pinerolo. And Freisa di Chieri, well-kept historical center of medieval just beyond the hills of Turin, celebrating on Saturday 20 and Sunday, April 21 the 40th anniversary of Doc “Of Freisa in Freisa” includes tastings for the public and professionals, banks and nurseries growers, as well as tasting delicious local products, among which the rubatà citizens included in the Basket of typical products of the province of Turin, and the sweet cake covered with sugar, confectioners pride of the village.
But do not be completely absorbed by the wine tasting along the central Via Vittorio Emanuele II and kept a little ‘time to climb the spiral staircase, which is on the hill of St. George, the seat of the medieval castle. The castle has not existed for centuries, but on its ruins was founded a church, the first Gothic, later destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the fifteenth century, now St. George has an eighteenth-century façade.
Beautiful view from the square on top of the hill and pleasant to walk in circles to get back in the center, following the footsteps of the ancient lands which stretch along the successive enlargements of the walls. Here some survives workshop of the past.
In the city, it is remarkable Romanesque cathedral, dating from the fifth century, and are interesting works of Moncalvo preserved in the church of San Domenico. If you look up a taste of the other, you will notice in Piazza Umberto I, a triumphal arch in miniature built in 1580 and then rebuilt several times over the centuries, has gradually evolved from a symbol to military noble decorative element to to incorporate, in the late nineteenth century, the clock of the square.
For all those who Freisa was not enough, a few kilometers from here, in the village Pessione, houses the Museum of History Martini Enology. Created by the owner of Martini & Rossi in the cellars of the eighteenth-century villa that hosted the first factory producing vermouth, collects Roman amphorae and ritual objects dating back thousands of years before Christ, wooden presses and services of nineteenth-century glass, filters and copper stills and wagons for the transport of the barrels. The last section tells the story of vermouth Piedmont.
