Rome of course, is one of the most loved cities by directors: hundreds of movies have been shoot here, ranging from neorealist ones, to costume dramas and comedy films. The latest is “Zoolander 2” and, if you are lucky you could meet Ben Stiller around the Eternal City, because in these days he is still here, shooting in via dei Fori Imperiali and other locations. Another movie recently shot in Rome is “007 Spectre”, the last episode of the series with Daniel Craig and the Italian bond girl Monica Bellucci, shot in many Roman locations among which Trastevere, Via Nomentana and Ponte Sisto.

Rome owes its fame also to movies, some unforgettable scenes of the Eternal City consecrated the history of Italian cinema indeed. Just think of the Oscar winning “La Dolce Vita” and “8½” (Federico Fellini, 1960 and 1972); “The Great Beauty” (Paolo Sorrentino, 2014)
Furthermore, Rome is one of the most important european capitals of the cinema, that every year hosts the “Festival del Cinema”, attracting many people and among others international directors and actors. The Eternal City boasts also Cinecittà, a sort of little Italian Hollywood where are preserved scenic settings and stage costumes used by many film directors and by many actors that made the history of the cinema.

But not only Rome, other enchanting cities have been sets of famous movies by international film directors.

Venice, with its historical palaces and mysterious streets has been the perfect setting for many costume dramas such as “Othello” by Orson Welles, the “Merchant of Venice”, but also “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and “007 Casino Royal”. Milan, Bolzano and Rome as well, were chosen for “The best offer” by Giuseppe Tornatore. The typical coastal towns of the Liguria region have been included in several films, the most recent one: “The Wolf of Wall Street” by Martin Scorsese, who shot some of the scenes in the enchanting locations of the Cinque Terre and Portofino. “The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Anthony Minghella, was shot in different Italian cities, starting from Rome and passing through the amazing seaside places of Sorrento, Ischia and Naples.”The Passion of Christ” by Mel Gibson was shot in the magic region of Basilicata, especially in Matera, well known for its historical old town center called “Sassi”, considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Sassi, originated from a prehistoric settlement, are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy and one of the oldest cities in the world. Also the breathtaking Craco, a very little “ghost town” was chosen as setting for this movie.
