Good to see you again for the third chapter of our article “Underrated cities you have to visit in Italy”. This time we will take you in gorgeous and inimitable South Italy, an enchanted and multi-coloured territory that the whole world envies us. But we want to bring you to cities not usually enlisted on the tourist routes, or rather, not in the most traditional ones.
Bari
We can start our trip from the capital of Apulia, the characteristic Bari. An important touristic and commercial port, it lays down on a fertile coastal plain where the charm of nature melts with picturesque villages, embellished by imposing castles and splendid cathedrals of the old town center. But the interesting part has yet to come. Between the old and the new town, we will be amazed by the majestic Castel del Monte or the impressive Basilica di San Nicola, where the holy relics of the famous saint are kept. If you feel like going on a coastal trip, we suggest you Polignano, located on a sheer cliff overlooking a marvelous sea, and Monopoli.
Salerno
Let’s continue our trip, the second stage will take us to Salerno, situated in the middle of the gulf of the same name in the Campania region. The town is the result of a great historic, artistic and urbanistic stratification. Plenty of panoramic beauties like the Lungomare Trieste or interesting attractions like suggestive Duomo or Porticciolo will make your visit an unforgettable one. Once there you have to see the precious jewel of Salerno province, Amalfi Coast, a complex of fantastic villages that all the world envies us.
Catania
This fantastic center of the indescribable Sicily encloses heterogeneous landscapes in a contained space. The majestic Etna Volcano, the gulf and the sea and wide rural areas around the city. Not to mention the urban richness of the city. Many public gardens (Villa Bellini), the subterranean river Amenano that arises in the so-called “Pescheria”, the Duomo with the Fountain of Elephant. Last but not least the thing that will astonish you is the multiple layers that represent the ancient town, the medieval, the renaissance, the baroque one, all like nestled one into another.
Cagliari
Last stop of our abundant tour is the capital of the almost not human Sardinia, really a divine land. An exotic and multicultural port city leaning in the middle of the Golfo Degli Angeli. Cagliari has in common with Rome, Prague or Istanbul the fact that it was built on seven calcareous hills that identify just as many areas: Castello, Tuvumannu/Tuvixeddu, Monte Claro, Monte Urpinu, Colle di Bonaria, Colle di San Michele, Calamosca/Sella del Diavolo. Another particularity of the city is its hill area where are its historic district and level areas with the 19th-century city.
