Herculaneum and The Amalfi Coast from Rome. In the early 18th century, Herculaneum was accidentally discovered during a well-digging project, situated at a depth of 50-60 feet below the current surface. Initially, informal excavations occurred, aiming to extract valuable items later sold as antiques. However, between 1749 and 1765, more systematic exploration took place under the Bourbon Kings of Naples and the Two Sicilies. Rocco Gioacchino Alcubierre and his assistant Carlo Weber supervised this scientific approach, resulting in the mapping of a basic town plan and the removal of portable artifacts. Although these early tunnels collapsed and were sealed, the 20th century saw renewed archaeological efforts, revealing a section of the town. Unfortunately, the prior tunneling had compromised the structural integrity of many buildings, and ongoing preservation challenges include exposure to the elements and periodic earth tremors.
The tour extends to the scenic Amalfi Coast, with a visit to Positano, often hailed as the most beautiful seaside village on the coast. Its enchanting landscape features narrow winding streets descending from the hilltop to the beach, creating a picturesque setting. As you leisurely stroll through these charming streets, you’ll encounter fashionable boutiques, shops, and the inviting seaside atmosphere. Positano’s reputation as the crown jewel of the Amalfi Coast is well-deserved, making it a must-visit destination for its captivating beauty and coastal allure.
