The Roman Food Tour – Testaccio, Trastevere & Aventine Hill – Shared Tour

The Roman Food Tour: Testaccio Trastevere Aventine Hill

Are you ready for a full immersion into an original local market to savor all the delicacies and traditional dishes of the real roman cuisine? We will start our food trip from one of Rome’s most popular markets, Testaccio. A very genuine and old area now renewed with clubs, museums, restaurants and cool venues, but that still preserves the original roman spirit. House of the biggest slaughterhouse of the capital, Testaccio or Monte dei Cocci, is an artificial mound in Rome composed almost entirely of fragments of broken amphorae dating to the Roman Empire. It was one of the largest spoil heaps found anywhere in the ancient world, and the marketplace of Ancient Rome, the neighborhood of the horrea, public warehouses of the ancient roman period and the district of the amphora. Definitely a must-see place. Here used to be sold every product or food like the entrails we can find in the typical dishes of Rome cooking tradition, such as the tasty tripe or “coda alla vaccinara” (Roman Oxtail Stew).

Are you ready for a full immersion into an original local market to savor all the delicacies and traditional dishes of the real roman cuisine?

We will lead you through 10 selected tastes inside the market to try: roman cheeses, mozzarella, Parma ham, artichokes, tripe, the “coppiette” (traditional Rome’s meat jerky), the amazing pasta and pizza, accompanied by the finest local wines, to end up with a proper espresso coffee far off the mass tourism beaten path. You will witness to cooking steps of how artichokes have to be cut, how puntarelle (Lazio’s special chicory) have to be dressed, or in addition you will discover what coratella is; all that witnessed together with the locals. After that we will guide you to Porto di Ripa Grande, that was the river port of Rome, to end up in some of the most characteristic and less visited churches of the charming Trastevere area, the 5th-century Santa Cecilia and Santa Maria dell’Orto. As an alternative to Trastevere you can match to this food tour a visit to the Aventine Hill, one of the Seven Hills on which Ancient Rome was built, to cherish the historical Basilica of Saint Sabina and the splendid Orange Garden, the green paradise that offers an amazing view of the Eternal Rome.
Don’t miss our brand new Food Tour, the only one that mixes the beauty to the taste of Rome.
