Mysterious Palermo – Shared Tour

Mysterious Palermo – Shared Tour

Focusing on the theme of the mysterious and the picturesque but also including many highlights: we drive up Monte Pellegrino from whose top (1800 feet) you can view the whole city and understand its development through its 27 centuries of history. We will visit the famous cave of Santa Rosalia: the most loved among the local Saints lived here absorbed in praying and here she’s honored today, in a baroque style sanctuary just outside the cave’s entrance. We return to Palermo to go down in the Crypt of the Capuchins containing 8000 bodies. A striking experience to learn the secrets of the mummification practiced by the friars since the end of the 16th century. Here rests the little Rose Lombardo, 2 years old, perfectly preserved by the noticeable skill of the outstanding embalmer Alfredo Salafia. At this point we enter the city’s historical district and after a short visit to the church of St Joseph, known as the neverending building site, with its amazing monolithic columns, we arrive to Marina square where we will visit the prisons of the Spanish holy inquisition located inside the 14th century Chiaromonte castle.

Here you will have the opportunity of a lunch à la carte by the restaurant named “Beati Paoli” after the famous 1700s secret society in whose meetings people’s life and death were decided.

Then a short walk to the nearby Abatelli Palace, housing the most important fine arts museum of the city, to admire the famous 15th century fresco “The Triumph of Death” dealing with the theme of the transience of the world’s pleasures; from here we will reach the Vespri square where, according to the legend, are buried the French killed during the revolution of 1282 which inspired Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Vespri Siciliani”. Here’s also the last stop of our tour, inside the 19th century art gallery where we will look at the shocking picture “Die Sünde” (the sin), a work by the symbolist master Franz Von Stück. (but if you just cannot end we can propose you an extra driving to the close by Spasimo church: but we don’t anticipate anything..it’s a surprise!)
