From Rome to San Gimignano & Siena

San Gimignano is one of the most imposing and best preserved medieval towns of Italy. The thirteen towers that dominate San Gimignano’s majestic skyline were built by noble families in the 12th and 13th century, when the town’s position, on the main pilgrim route from northern Europe to Rome, brought great prosperity. The plague of 1348, and the diversion of the pilgrims route, led to its decline. The decline ironically helped to preserve the town’s medieval aspect intact until today.

San Gimignano is one of the most imposing and best preserved medieval towns of Italy.

Piazza del Campo in Siena with its red-brown stone, is one of the finest squares of the italian medieval towns. As old as the square itself are the traditions reverberating off its pavements twice in a year during the Palio delle Contrade, the Italy’s most colorful festival with rehearsals, processions and pageantry leading up to the climactic bareback horse race around the Piazza.
