There are 8,000 square metres of exhibition space, parking and shops. This is Exp’Ostia, Roma Capitale’s new cultural pole located not far from the archaeological site of Ostia Antica. It stands in an area that was used during the 1930s as a bus
depot by Atac and it was built entirely thanks to project financing. The area is now ready to showcase Rome’s latest artistic movements, becoming part of the city’s exhibition circuit.
The programme begins with the exhibition ‘Roman Mosaics’, describing this ancient craft through thirty exhibits. Various types of flooring and wall decoration are displayed: tesserae fixed onto a backing surface, large shapes in opus sectile, and emblemata, a procedure in which minute marble and glass tesserae are used to reproduce images for insertion in a larger area of flooring. All the exhibits come from the city’s late 19th and early 20th century archaeological collections of objects found during the excavations undertaken when the city was chosen as capital of the Kingdom of Italy.
