Italian Panino

From junk food symbol and lunch on the go to cult status, this is the third millennium sandwich. Homemade bread, sophisticated ingredients, a dash of creativity and an attractive price: a host of sandwich bars have opened in the past year selling designer panini. Choose between high quality hamburgers and a re-edition of the traditional Italian panini. On one side you have meat balls made from Italian beef from herds of chianina, podolica or piemontese cattle raised in Slow Food farms, seasoned and served with genuine products; on the other elaborate and sophisticated re-inventions of the traditional filled roll. Variations on the meatball theme range from America in Rome, a beef burger with carbonara (eggs and bacon) or cacio cheese and pepper sauce (at Quarto Burgers); 10 types of burger including one seasoned with Naga Jolokia, the hottest chilli pepper in the world (at The Perfect Bun); burgers made with piemontese beef and DOP Italian cheese such as Caciocavallo and Piacentino di Enna (at Ham Holy Burger); and meat from the temples of Slow Food (at Open Baladin). Gourmet rolls and panini  include squid ink bread with tuna sausage or apple and rye bread with foie gras (at Tricolore), spicy beef and lamb pastrami (at Rosti), and a choice of dozens of different fillings and ingredients (at La Sandwicheria; 200°). In the morning, during market opening hours, you can taste rolls filled with classic Roman dishes, like boiled meat with picchiapò sauce, tripe Roman style, fried meatballs and chicory, for just 3 euros (at Mordi e Vai).
