In Rome there is a “particular” restaurant

The place is famous for the insults, swearing and profanity (hence the name) addressed to customers by the service staff and the entertainer. The waiters, with each dish, make compliments and jokes aimed at the customers; the musical animation with guitar and accordion consists of Roman vernacular stornelli, adapted and weighted according to the audience present at the tables.

It sounds like a joke and instead it’s a spectacular commercial gimmick. It’s not easy to eat in this place because you are laughing all the time. Traditional Roman cuisine, entertainment and guaranteed entertainment. Stay away from the touchy: a small, warm place, to be booked in advance otherwise it will be difficult to find a place. Must try at least once in your life.

The restaurant “Cencio, La Parolaccia” is located in Rome, in Vicolo del Cinque, Trastevere area: since 1941 it has distinguished itself from all the other Roman taverns, for its particular folk entertainment. “Vulgar” entertainment has become their forte.

The restaurant, initially called Osteria da Cencio, was opened in 1941 by the spouses Vincenzo “Cencio” and Renata de Santis, who decided to combine the traditional work of catering with entertainment based on Roman folk songs often seasoned with spicy and vulgar terms.

The operation was a success and so in 1951 the place officially took the name of La Parolaccia and became a place for special dinners for actors and show business personalities.

The family tradition continues, today the children of Cencio and Renata manage the restaurant and nothing has changed. Insults and bad words are spared no one, not even the ladies. Indeed, they are the first to receive appreciations that are not exactly subtle, even of a sexual nature.

Definitely not recommended for couples for a romantic evening, not for foreigners who wouldn’t understand and not for unsuspecting tourists. It’s just like being in the theatre.

Clearly you have to know how to take a joke and be satisfied with the food, typical of a tavern. The traditional dishes are in fact simple and the prices quite high but the show, the gags, the jokes are definitely worth the expense.

Thanks to its particularity, The bad word has inspired restaurants mentioned in various comedy films such as Made in Italy, Simpatici & antipatici and Fracchia the human beast (where it is renamed Da Sergio e Bruno – Gli Incivili) or like La banda del trucido with Tomas Milian ( here the restaurant is called La pernacchia). The restaurant is mentioned and used in some scenes of the film Trastevere (1971), in which it is managed by Nanda, played by Ottavia Piccolo.
