From Rome to Orvieto & Civita di Bagnoregio

The beautiful Orvieto's Cathedral facade is among the best in the world

From Rome to Orvieto & Civita di Bagnoregio

Halfway between Lazio and Tuscany we can find Orvieto, a little town of Umbria. While the part of the city on the surface has changed over time, the original subterranean structure has remained mostly intact. The guided tour of Orvieto Underground is therefore, the most suitable tool to get in touch with this very characteristic feature of the city, extremely wealthy in history and boasting very remarkable artistic “jewels”. Step by step, mysterious and fascinating echoes tell us about Etruscan age, while phantoms of the Middle ages and of the Renaissance era appear out of the damp shadows.

The beautiful Orvieto’s Cathedral facade is among the best in the world

As regard as decoration and its interior part, painted by Luca Signorelli. It was source of inspiration even for masters as Michelangelo. Michelangelo infact before starting to paint Sistine Chapel, went to Orvieto to admire how Luca Signorelli painted Heaven and Hell into the Cathedral. (entry fees cost: 7 Euros per person). For lunch, the Foresi Cantina will offer you a great wine tasting and local products like truffles and porcini mushrooms, cheese, bruschetta and a homemade sauce. Another attraction is Giacomini Porcelain and Ceramics store with its rich variety of handmade vases, dishes and potteries handcrafted by the Giacomini Family for 100 years.

We’ll pick you up at your hotel or B&B in Rome in the morning. We suggest to start at 7:30 AM in order to avoid the rush hour. It will take aprox. 2 hours to get to Orvieto where you will visit The Duomo and the underground city. Let us know if you want a local tour guide in Orvieto for 2-3 hours to walk the town.

After these part of the tour we’ll drive you to Civita di Bagnoregio the dying village. Civita, which is inhabited by only 16 people, is situated in a solitary area and it is reachable only by a reinforced concrete pedestrian bridge built in 1995.

The bridge is generally restricted to pedestrians, but to meet the requirements of residents and workers the Municipality of Bagnoregio issued a statement that these people may cross the bridge by bike or by motorcycle at certain times. The reason for its isolation is the progressive erosion of the hill and the nearby valley which create the badlands; this process is still ongoing and there is the danger that the village could disappear. This is why Civita is also known as “The Dying Town”.
